The
Merritt Brown Middle School National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is a
service organization offering its members the opportunity to share their
interests with their peers, learn leadership skills and receive
recognition for their academic success.
The members of NJHS must have a 3.0 grade point average, have good
attendance, and model the five tenants of the NJHS: scholarship, service,
citizenship, character and leadership. The MBMS-NJHS meets weekly on
Thursdays after school. During these meetings, officers report on
their committee work, plans and decisions on school activities are made,
and a speaker may be invited to present. The MBMS-NJHS pledge:
I pledge myself
Always to seek the light of truth
To hold scholarly habits
To engage in worthy service
To lead forward in all things
That shall advance the welfare of my school
The 2006-2007 school year has
been our most active ever. We
participated in the RUSH week to encourage students to earn the
opportunity to be a member. Our
service projects are funded partially through the monthly movie we show in
the cafeteria after school. For
$1 admission students can see a top (PG) movie and socialize with their
friends. The admission money
has been given to the Red Cross, to the Salvation Army, for a Winn Dixie
grocery gift card for a needy family, to honor those who died 9/11/2001 by
displaying miniature flags in the courtyard and the purchase of toys for
the Pediatric wing at Gulf Coast Medical Center- delivered just before
Christmas. We also fundraise
by selling backboards during science and history fair time at just above
cost so students don’t have to pay high prices in town for the same
materials, and sell concessions at the monthly movie.
Those funds are used to purchase the backboards to sell and to buy
the candy to sell and buy our weekly meeting snacks.
Other service projects include going to the Anchorage Children’s
Home to make gingerbread houses with the little children who live there.
We will be selling shamrocks for the Muscular Dystrophy Association
around
3/17/2007
. We are also planning the
fourth annual Young Leaders Conference for this April.
Hosted by MBMS-NJHS and facilitated by the Bay High school SGA,
nearly 60 MBMS students are chosen from the various clubs on campus to
participate each year learning leadership skills and making plans to
better MBMS for all students in the coming year.
NJHS members raise and lower the school flag every day weather
permitting and host a reception for students nominated for academic awards
at the end of each school year. Membership
dues is a one time ten dollar payment that is used to pay for the
membership pin (NJHS torch) and membership card.
Members are also able to purchase a club t-shirt at cost.
Many members are not able to be active as they are busy with music
lessons, sports, and other extracurricular activities.
All those inducted into the organization are encouraged to be as
active as possible. There are
two inductions each school year. The
first in the fall for seventh and eighth grade students and the spring
induction for sixth grade students.

National Junior Honor Society meets every Thursday
from
3:10 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.
in the cafeteria or room 1-122.
