Search Engines

INET Library
is the best place to start for most of your research assignments. INET
allows you to search over 10,000 books, over 4200 newspapers and magazines
and over 20,000 websites as well as online dictionaries, maps, phone books,
42 different encyclopedias and more. There are special areas for students
and teachers. The collection can be searched by keywords or topics. INET
rates websites by reading level, so you can be sure which websites are right
for your project.
ProQuest
is the best place to start when researching current events or people in the
news. Search over 475 magazines and newspapers going back to 1986. Find the
information you need using a keyword, several keywords, or a phrase. Limit
your search to articles published in the months or years you choose. Not
sure what current event you want to research? Try the Subject List. If you
like, you can email your articles to your home email address. ProQuest will
even give you the article title and publication name exactly as it should
appear in your bibliography.
EBSCOHOST allows
you to search 1800 magazines by keyword or topic. You can choose the
magazine you want to search, limit your search results to the months and
years you need, and view the articles as text only or exactly as they
appeared in the magazine, complete with pictures and graphics. Print the
articles, save them on a disk, or even email them to your home email
address. One of EBSCO’s best features is the Image Collection. Need a
photo for your backboard? You will probably find it in the Image Collection
along with a caption that describes the picture, the publication date, and
the source information you need for your bibliography.
Northernlight.com
is a new search engine that makes Internet research faster and easier.
Search results are organized into folders, so you won’t have to go through
a list of hundreds of websites before finding what you want. Northern Light’s
index includes more than twice as many websites as Yahoo, Excite and Lycos
and the rest.

The Kee pers
of the Water project is presented as 12 topics concerning the Colorado
Springs water system. Each topic includes background information for the
teacher as well as references to the proposed Colorado State Standards. The
activities, quotes, facts and diagrams are designed so teachers can choose
interesting and appropriate challenges for their students. The
interdisciplinary nature of the activities enables teachers to work in teams
and help students explore water issues across the curriculum. Although
this reference deals specifically with water in Colorado Springs and the
State of Colorado, its information and lessons are universally applicable
for those studying water in the environment.
