New Horizons Information Center

Although our campus is small, the facilities at New Horizons provide an excellent
platform for the education of our students. The Administration Building
houses our support staff and guidance counselors. In addition to individual
classrooms, New Horizons has several greenhouses as part of our Horticulture
program, basketball courts and a soccer field for our Physical Education program,
a Media Center with both traditional books and multimedia resources, a Technology
Laboratory that includes fourteen networked workstations with Internet access,
and an Instructional Television Studio
.
The curriculum at New Horizons Learning Center is based on the Sunshine State Standards and provides for individualized, performance based instruction, computer-assisted basic skills remediation, vocational training, and community based instruction geared to the specific abilities and needs of the student. A variety of courses and instructional programs are integrated into a campus-wide setting. Upon successful completion of the course requirements, high school students will be awarded credit towards graduation, and middle school students may progress from one grade to another. Also included is a positive behavior change component, based upon a levels system, designed to teach coping and survival skills, and to assist students in developing a sportive attitude toward learning, the school environment, staff, other students and themselves.
The course of study for students accepted into New Horizons Learning Center may parallel the course of study they were pursing immediately prior to entry into the program.
ESE students’ prescribed course of study will take the form of an IEP (Individual Education Plan) covering the amount of time the student is to be staffed into the program. In addition to instruction in academic courses, behavioral counseling and social skills training will be an integral part of the instruction. The development of students’ IEPs will follow normal procedures. All available academic, disciplinary, psychological and attendance data will be used as a source of information when developing IEPs for students. Students enrolled in the R.E.A.C.H. (Retrieving and Enhancing Academic Choices) program will have a prescribed course of study that will allow appropriate progress.
Course modifications will be used as necessary in order to facilitate the movement of students through his or her course of study.
Student placement and advancement conforms with the Bay County Pupil Progression Plan, and student behavior is governed by the Bay County Student Code of Conduct and Discipline
Enrollment in New Horizons Learning Center is based on the following situations:
1. We serve as Bay District School’s 6-12th grade center based school for students designated as SED (Severely Emotionally Disturbed) students. They are placed through the Exceptional Student Education staffing process, and New Horizons is their home school.
2. Students are referred from District Middle or High Schools. School Child Study Teams assess a student’s individual needs and recommend students who they feel would best be served by New Horizons’ program.
3. The Bay District School Board, acting in their official capacity, may place a student at New Horizons.
Parents who think their child would benefit from New Horizons’ program should contact our guidance staff or the guidance staff of their child’s school for more information.
