Many parents have a pattern for being involved in the education of their children. They start off strong in elementary school and taper off in middle school. By high school involvement is minimal. Sound familiar? If so, make a change when your teen goes back to school after the winter break. Here are some ideas: · Stress regular school attendance and coming to school on time. Yes, this is still important even for teens who will be in the last semester of senior year. · Make clear to your teen that you support their teachers and the rules at school. Of course this means you need to know what the rules are. Take a few minutes to review your school discipline policy. · Be familiar with your teens homework, testing and project schedule. Hold them accountable for completing work on time. · Spend at least one day or evening volunteering. Often, schools need parents to volunteer. Signing up for even one event can make a difference. · Attend at least one school event. Make every effort to attend events in which your teen plays a role. · Know what is going on at school. Reading the school newsletter is a great way to keep up. · Check in with you teen’s teachers. The beginning of a new semester is the perfect time to do this. Give teachers your contact information if they do not already have it. · Remember that teachers hear often from parents if their children are having problems, but hear little if things are going well. Consider emailing or writing a note of thanks to a teacher from whom your teen learned a lot last semester. |

Our school participated in the Salvation Army Christmas Canned Food Drive. Our students collected 908 canned food items and over 700 pounds of food! This food was distributed to families in need during Christmas time. Ms. Byrne and Mr. Maxhimer’s classes collected the most cans and earned a Pizza Party. Mr. McDonough’s class did a wonderful job collecting, calculating and organizing the collected food items. This was a wonderful project for our students to participate in and we were very successful in helping others have a brighter holiday. |
