N.H.L.C. Middle School Activities

By Gene,  Student Reporter

Hi everybody, I’m Gene, the school’s student reporter for Middle School Team 1.  The teachers on our team are Mrs. Blanchard, Ms. Justice, Ms. Ramirez, Mr. Mills, and Mr. Hood.  Here are some of the things were studying in their classes and some statements they told me.

In Ms. Ramirez’s language arts class we have been learning about poetic and figurative language such as similes, metaphors, and onomatopoeia.  We have written a poem using similes.  We also are learning about grammar, punctuation, and parts of speech.  Ms. Ramirez has been at N.H.L.C. for six years and states that she loves it here because she has gotten to know so many great kids.

In Mr. Mills’s class we’re studying fractions, LCD (least common denominator), and comparing fractions.  Mr. Mills states that he likes N.H.L.C. and is still adjusting to teaching kids who don’ t listen.

In Mr. Hoods class we’re studying the geography and history of Florida.  Mr. Hood states that he enjoys being here.  He started here three years ago as a sub.  Two years ago he was a para, and this year he is a history teacher.

In Ms. Justice’s class we’re studying the solar system and its planets.  We have a presentation due on the planets.  Next week we’ll be doing models of the solar system.  This is Ms. Justice’s first year here and she states that she loves teaching at N.H.L.C.  She likes the students and staff very much.

In Mrs. Blanchard’s social/personal skills class we are learning the “Essential 55 ” rules which come from a book by Ron Clark.  These rules are to help us respect ourselves and others and to help us become more responsible.  We have also read Freak the Mighty and are currently reading Maniac Magee.  Mrs. Blanchard has been teaching at New Horizons for nine years.

Wanted:

Box Tops for Education (on General Mills

products) & Tyson (on Tyson food products) labels.  Please check your food products at home & if you see these labels, cut them out & send them to school.  We get money for every label we send in.  The class that collects the most at the end of the year, will receive a pizza party.  Thank you, Ms. Halker.

Mrs. Keith’s class

My integrated class is filling the greenhouse with fall vegetable seedlings including collards, broccoli, mustard, and turnips.

We will be starting pansies and ornamental cabbages soon.  We also have several beds of greens around campus.

We will be planting shrubs in front of the school this month in honor of Red Ribbon Week.

Our next nine weeks of study will based on the theme, "The World We Live In". We'll incorporate math, language arts, social studies and science into our investigations of our natural world.

Parent, Students and Friends of New Horizons,

We are now in the second grading period of School Year 2005-2006.

For those who did well on their first report card: Congratulations!!  For those that fell short, remember, we still have three more grading periods to study harder!!

Parents, please stay active and involved in your child’s education.  Grades are an excellent indicator of your student’s academic performance.

Another way to stay involved in your child’s education is to participate in the New Horizons School’s Advisory Committee.  The school advisory committee monitors and helps shape our school’s academic goals and is made up of parents and community stakeholders. We need your participation!
