Turn your leisure time into “getting to know you” time When your child tells you about what he/she likes to do, is he/she speaking a foreign language? Is his/her leisure time filled with video games and skateboarding while yours is taken up by Golf or gardening? If so, you’re missing out on an important opportunity to connect with him/her. By sharing recreation time with your middle/high schooler, you’ll gain insight into what makes him/her tick. You’ll also get to see the adult he/she is becoming. To enjoy down-time with your child: · Try doing what he/she does. Have him/her show you how to play his/her favorite game, then go head-to head with him/her in a friendly match. · Invite him/her into your world. You love hitting the links, but he/she hates it, right? Maybe not — especially if you’ve never asked him/her to take part. Bring him/her with you to the racquetball court, the art gallery, or whatever you ‘re doing. Show him/her that you enjoy his/her company and want to have fun together. |

Strength Team Visit New Horizons Our students were afforded a real treat on November 16th! Two members of the nationally-known Mike Hagen Strength Team presented a school assembly at New Horizons that was a real "attention-getter". Known for their demonstrations of strength - blowing up hot water bottles, busting cans of soda with their hands, bending iron bars, breaking baseball bats... they had everyone's attention. While performing these feats of strength (and had the students' attention), they accomplished their mission - encouraging a "can do" attitude, stay in school, say no to drugs, no bullying... in short, a good "teachable moment". A special thank you to Mr. O'Campo and Ms. Kelly-Ruleau for (on their own time) securing a large portion of the funding for this event, and a very special thank you to Mr. Thorsten Pfeffer for his generous contribution. |
