Community: Bay High School is located in downtown Panama City, Bay County, Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico in NW Florida’s panhandle region. The area population is approximately 148,000.
School: Bay High School is one of the oldest continuously accredited high schools in Florida. The mission of Bay High School is to be a progressive, innovative learning organization that provides a diverse student body with an appropriate curriculum which will be delivered in a safe, orderly environment. With a caring, nurturing faculty and staff who are committed to this mission, we will prepare our students to think critically, to act responsibly, and to perform successfully. Additionally, this mission will allow our students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in an ever increasing culturally diverse and technologically sophisticated world.
Student Population: Bay High School has a diverse population. Student demographics are as follows: white 65%, African-American 25%, Hispanic 5%, Asian 2%, and others 3%. Approximately 44% of Bay High School students qualify for free or reduced federal meal program.
2009 National Merit Scholarship Program: 1 Commended Student
2009 Cambridge Scholars and AICE Diplomas: 26 Cambridge Scholars - The University of Cambridge awards the Cambridge Scholar award to students who earn three passing scores of “c” or better in a single examination sitting.
44 Advanced International Certificate of Education Diplomas – The University of Cambridge awards the AICE Diploma for students who pass six GCE Advanced Subsidiary Level examinations with at least one exam in each of the three subject areas. Students earning the AICE Diploma qualify for the Florida Bright Futures Academic Scholars Award.
2009 Advanced Placement Scholars: 3 AP Scholars, 1 AP Scholar with Honor – The CollegeBoard awards the AP Scholar award to students who pass three AP exams during their high school career.
Faculty: Bay High School has 3 professional staff employees who hold Specialist’s degrees, 37 who hold Master’s degrees, and 35 who hold Bachelor’s degrees. The average experience of the teaching faculty is17 years. The student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1.
Curriculum: Bay High School offers a wide curriculum which includes college preparatory, specialized magnet programs, and general diploma studies.
AICE: The top academic students at Bay High School participate in the Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) program in the 11th and 12th grade years, with Pre-AICE (IGCSE) classes offered in the 9th and 10th grade years. Administered and examined by the University of Cambridge, England, students are required to sit for six exams with at least one exam in each of the three subject areas: Mathematics and Sciences, Languages, Arts and Humanities. Students choose three or more additional examinations from among all courses offered. The General Certificate of Education (GCE) courses are tested at both the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced (A) Levels. Courses are identified by AICE. Courses offered include Mathematics I, Mathematics II, Physics, Marine Science, English Language, Literature in English, Latin, Art and Design, Dress and Textiles, US History, International History, Classical Studies, Economics, and Thinking Skills. Advanced Placement courses are offered in correlation with the AICE program. Examinations offered are Calculus AB, English Language and Composition, English Literature, and Latin.
Dual Enrollment is offered through a cooperative program with Gulf Coast Community College in which students earn both high school and college credits. These courses are designated by college course numbers consisting of alpha-numeric designations. Dual enrolled courses are offered in Western Civilization I and II, American History, American Government, College Algebra, Statistics, Plane Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Biology, Environmental Science, Psychology, Human Relations, and English Composition. Dual Enrolled vocational classes are offered. These vocational classes include Photography, Video Technology, Basic Video Production, Web Site Design, Adobe Photoshop, and Criminal Justice.
Honors classes are offered in English I through English III, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Biology I and II, Chemistry, Integrated Science, World History, US History, Anatomy and Physiology, and Economics. There courses are identified by the letters “HON” or “Pre-AICE”.
Highest Level of English and Mathematics: A Level Literature in English (AICE), A Level in Mathematics (AICE).
Class Rank, GPA Computations, and Grading System: A weighted Grade Point Average is computed by including all course work in all subjects taken in grades 9 – 12. Class Rank is determined by comparing weighted Grade Point Averages. Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE), Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrolled (DE), and Honors course grades receive extra weight. Ranks are updated each semester.
