Prevent Summer Set-Back!
Keep children reading all summer long!

Summer Reading Program
Print list from this link

Scientifically-based research shows that some children lose nearly three months of grade-level equivalency during the summer months. To prevent this summer set-back, Cedar Grove teachers have prepared summer reading lists for each grade level. Information will be sent home soon. Our library will be open each Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, June 11-July 16 (closed the week of July 4th.) The Bay County Public Library also conducts a summer reading program.

Students Entering the First Grade in 2008

Below is a list of reading suggestions for the students who will be entering Cedar Grove’s first grade in the fall of 2008. The purpose of summer reading
is to continue to strengthen the enjoyment of hearing and/or reading a story.
We encourage you to read and enjoy the books you have at home. Additional suggested authors and titles for first grade are listed. We understand that some children are not yet independent readers. It is okay to read to your child. By all means, make it enjoyable and not frustrating!

Read one or two books a week during the summer. Practice summarizing by choosing at least three books and tell about each in one or two sentences.

A picture should be drawn and colored with the summary.

Please list all books read from the list provided in this packet. Your child is expected to have read or heard ten books by the end of the summer. Return the list and the
summaries to your child’s teacher when school begins in August.

You can search on our school website for a list of our Accelerator Reader books which will show reading levels. We have all of these books available in our library or you can use the Bay County Public Library.

Dear Parents,

Summer is almost here and everyone is ready for a well-deserved vacation. While summer is a time of rest and relaxation, please keep in mind that in order to keep your child’s reading level current they should continue to practice their reading over the summer. Please encourage your student to read at least five chapter books during the summer. These books should be at or above their current grade level. Our Media Center will be open Wednesdays from 10:00 – 12:00, June 11th–July 16th (closed the week of July 4th). The new Bay County Public Library is also a great place to find books on all reading levels during the summer.

If they choose to, your child can make a poster about the book, write a letter to the author, create a shoebox scene, or design a bookmark.  When school begins in the fall, your child can present their project to the class. They can also take an AR test during the summer at the library or the first week back at school.

Choose anything you want to read in your reading range, but make sure to read five chapter books. Make it a book that is interesting!

Dear Parents and students,

Summer is almost here and everyone is ready for a well-deserved vacation. While summer is a time of rest and relaxation, please keep in mind that 5th grade students are required to read at least three novels during the summer. These novels must be at or above your current grade level, unless you have special permission to do otherwise from your present teacher. You must take AR tests on the novels you read. Our Media Center will be open Wednesdays from 10:00 – 12:00, June 11th– July 16th, closed July 4th week. The Bay County Public Library is also a great place to find books on all reading levels during the summer.

If you choose to, you can skip the AR test on one novel and create a poster that represents the basic plot of the novel. When school begins in the fall, you must present this poster to the class. The test/poster will count towards your 1st quarter grade, so take this requirement seriously.

Choose anything you want to read in your reading range. Make it a book that is interesting!
