ENTRANCE/REGISTRATION
REQUIREMENTS
Anyone
16 years of age or above and are not currently enrolled in
regular high
school may apply for admission to attend Shaw classes. Shaw is an adult school
with individualized programs.
Students
who attend a regular high school during the day, may also be
concurrently enrolled at Shaw in the evening. Permission to attend Shaw at
night
must be obtained from the 'home" high
school, and enrollment procedures for high
school makeup credits must be followed. To maintain the student's "home
school"
credit requirements for graduation, a Letter of Permission must be brought
to Shaw
each year to verify actual courses required.
New
students may register Monday thru Friday (7:30 a.m. until 2:00
p.m.) and enter school that day or night. Night registration
is available periodically, please call 850.872.4555 for dates.
During
certain times of the year, enrollment may be temporarily closed.
These
dates are announced ahead of the closing. Students may register to attend a
site of
their choice which offers the required courses. However, if a site has reached
its
student capacity, students will need to register for another available site.
State
law requires that before a student enters class, the Test of
Adult Basic
Education (TABE) skills placement exam must be taken. Scores received on this
test will determine the placement of the student-refresher classes or direct
entry into
credit earning courses. A student's placement is based on their achievement
level as
shown by the TABE. The TABE is given on a scheduled basis each week The test
will also assess the student's skills and determine what success the student
may
expect on the actual GED test. If additional preparation is needed before taking
the
GED, students may register for GED preparation classes to help them in preparing
for the test.
If
a student has attended high school before entering Shaw, and
plans to enter Shaw's High School program,
transcript/withdrawal form will be required before an official evaluation of
credits is completed. A transcript request form should be completed after the student
completes the registration card.

Attendance Policy
A student registered in any class is expected to attend every
class period. The teacher for each class period will keep attendance
with each class being independent of any other. Absences will
be counted from the first scheduled class meeting.
• Day students will be dropped on the day of their fifth absence
of the month.
• Evening students will be dropped on the evening of their fourth
absence of the month.
• The teacher's attendance book will be the final authority in
determining the number of absences for each student.
• There are NO excused or unexcused absences.
If a student violates the attendance policy, the student will be withdrawn from
class. If a student is withdrawn twice for excessive absences
and/or failure to attend, the student may not re-enter for a
period of nine weeks.
Students under age 18 must be enrolled as
a full-time student. If a student under age 18 gets dropped from
one class period, they will be dropped from all classes.

TARDY
POLICY
Three (3) tardies equal one absence. A student is tardy if not in the classroom
when the bell rings on the main campus for class to start or
at the designated class time for off-campus sites. If a student
arrives in class 10 or more minutes after the bell has rung,
the student will be counted absent, but will be admitted to class.
When students are tardy, they should report directly to class.
A student is expected to remain in class during the full class period. Leaving
the classroom is only authorized in EXTREME EMERGENCY situations.
If a student leaves for any other reason, they will be marked
absent for the entire class period.
For veterans, and Social Security students, excessive absences
or extended breaks could result in loss of benefits.

STUDENT
PROGRESS
Shaw provides individualized instruction in their programs for adult learning
and reasonable academic progress is expected from students.
Reasonable academic progress is based on a teacher's measure
of progress. Where regular testing of subject matter is required
(usually in the Adult Secondary Program), reasonable academic
progress is interpreted to mean taking a minimum of two tests
per week per course. Students may be required to sign a Probation
Agreement if satisfactory progress is not being achieved. Failure
to abide by the individual agreement may result in withdrawal
from a course.
While most high school students may complete two tests per class period, teachers
may allow students to take up to three chapter tests during one
class period. This teacher’s decision will be made: if the teacher
has sufficient time to check materials turned in by students
before they test; if the student has sufficient time to complete
the test; and if satisfactory progress (C or better on tests)
is being made. This provides an opportunity for the teacher to
grade all students' tests and assist students on an individual
basis before they continue in their studies. Each room has a
designated testing area. Instructors may require assignments
to be completed in class.
The teacher records progress in an individual
course. Upon interruption or completion of the course, the student
progress card is filed in the student's record in the Guidance
office. In the high school courses, student progress cards are
kept on file for one calendar year so that students can continue
instruction at the point where the instruction was interrupted.
If course requirements change or the course is not completed
in one calendar year, the entire course must be repeated.
GED Preparation and Adult Basic Education
progress records are also kept for one year. All students may
be required to re-take the TABE, on a periodic basis, to document
progress.
ESOL students will be assessed regularly to
show student progress and competencies are being met.

earned at other high schools (grades 9-12) will be applied
toward the
graduation requirements of Shaw.

GRADING
SYSTEM
A = 90 - 100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
Shaw
has a "no fail" policy. When students receive a test score of 69 or below,
they may be required to complete additional assignments before they take a
second test. Ten points are subtracted from the earned score of the second
(alternate) test
for the test grade. Students are required to take tests covering the assignments
until
a passing grade is achieved on each test. Alternate tests which cover the assigned
material are given. Teachers can use their discretion and determine if the
student
has made adequate preparation for testing.
