ADULT BASIC EDUCATION
Students needing basic literacy skills or those who score below the ninth grade on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE-Placement Test) may attend free classes to help them in achieving literacy or increasing their basic skills. The Adult Basic Education Program may require 2400 clock hour

ADULT ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL)
Students whose native language is not English and who wish to learn to speak English
may enroll in the adult ESOL class. As many as 18 different cultures have been represented at once in the class on the main campus. Although ESOL enrollment is offered at any site, a concentrated program is offered full time on the main campus during the day.

HIGH SCHOOL
Students attending Shaw may earn a regular high school diploma by completing the county requirements listed in this handbook. Students are allowed to earn credits upon satisfactorily completing the work required in a high school subject. After receiving and evaluating a student's official transcript, credit is allowed for most previously earned credits.

GED PREPARATION
An adult who is at least 18 years of age and is a resident of Florida is eligible to take an examination for a State of Florida High School Diploma. This examination is known as the General Education Development Test (GED). For complete details, see the Guidance Office on the main campus at Shaw or your GED teacher. The TABE placement test will determine if a student is ready to take the GED test. Refresher courses may be taken at Shaw to help students prepare for the GED.Students are not encouraged to quit their regular high school program to enter this class, since all students who apply are not accepted.

GED Test Information
The GED Test covers five academic areas:
Language Arts Writing, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts Reading, and Mathematics. A
State of Florida High School Diploma is awarded to examinees who achieve
a minimum score of 410 or more on each test and a total score of 2250 on all
tests.

Three eligibility requirements for the State of Florida High School Diploma
(GED):

1. Only persons who have not graduated from an accredited high school or have not received a high school equivalency diploma are eligible to take the GED test.


2. Examinees must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the examination. However, under extraordinary circumstances, in
accordance with the rules of the Bay County School Board, persons who are at least 16 years of age may be permitted to take
the test.


3. Only Florida residents are allowed to test and receive a State of Florida High School Diploma. Residency is defined in Florida
Statute 240.1201.

The GED test is held at the main campus of Shaw Educational Center and the CCA Prison Annex. Persons interested in registering for the GED must come to the Shaw Guidance Office with a Florida picture ID and Social Security Card. Acceptable ID's include:

Drivers' licenses, military, school, or government identification cards, and comparable forms of identification such as that provided by motor
vehicle departments to nondrivers which show name, address, birth date, signature and photograph are all acceptable forms of identification.

The cost of the test is $70 (cash), money order,or cashiers check, for all five parts or $14 per individual parts. A non-refundable policy for exams will be enforced and special test modifications are available upon request.

Shaw Educational Center administers the test twice a month: during the week (two-day test) and on the weekend (one-day test) to best accommodate the community. Please check the GED schedule for the test date that meets your needs.
