Tommy Smith
Mr. Tommy Elzie Smith

Mr. Tommy Smith was "born in Panama City at the age of five."  He attended local schols and graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in education.

He served Bay County as a teacher, a superintendent, and a school board member.  He initiated innovative programs and received both state and national recognition.

Mr. Smith had a passion for writing and as a very young man was sports editor of the Bay County Herald.  He also wrote a sports column, "Smithereens for Sports", for the News Herald.  Combining his love for history and journalism, Smith wrote a weekly column for the ay Beach News for 14 years.  At the age of 90, he wrote and published The History of Bay County from the Beginning and later The History of Bay County in Pictures.

History was his hobby, and he was involved in the Historical Society of Bay County, serving in many capacities.  Mr. Smith joined the Kiwanis Club in 1948 and served as club president, secretary, and lieutenant governor during his more than 50 years with the club.  He was also a Mason, executive director of the American Red Cross, and director of the Cancer Society and United Way.  Mr. Smith served on numerous other boards and rceived many awards, culminating the the Citizen of the Year Award in 2001.

He worshiped at First United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and served on numerous boards.

Mr. Smith was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and mentor. Family members remember him for his great love, his wonderful stories, his sense of humor, and his faith in God.  Students and teachers at Tommy Smith Elementary School remember his frequent visits and his generous hugs.

Tommy Elzie Smith died at the age of 96 on March 30, 2008.
